NEW ORLEANS — Success showed on the track this spring for the Saint Mary’s men’s and women’s track teams, and Thursday both programs proved their success off the track as well, being named All-Academic Teams by the United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association.
The women’s team led the way with a 3.49 team Grade Point Average. Among 220 NCAA Division I women’s track and field programs named All-Academic Thursday by the USTFCCCA, the Gaels’ ranked among the top-35 team GPAs in the country.
The men’s team was named All-Academic with a 3.27 team GPA. Among the 110 NCAA Division I men’s track and field programs named All-Academic, the Gaels’ ranked among the top-30.
“I’m proud of our teams as they continue to raise the bar academically and keep up with the tradition of excellence in the classroom,” said Saint Mary’s head coach Marty Kinsey.
Program and personal records fell for both teams this spring, culminating in the men’s program sending Saint Mary’s first-ever participants to the NCAA West Region Preliminary Meet in May. The fall cross country season begins on Sept. 1 when the women face West Coast Conference rival Pacific in a dual meet in Walnut Creek. Both teams compete on Sept. 3 at the San Francisco Invitational at Golden Gate Park in San Francisco.
