RANCHO CORDOVA, Calif. — The Saint Mary’s rowing team started off their fall season at the Head of the American on Saturday at Lake Natoma, debuting a new novice eight team and improving on last year’s times.
SMC’s novice eight kicked off their collegiate career by finishing sixth out of 10 teams, improving from last year’s seventh-place finish. They beat out boats from Cal Maritime, Chico State and California.
In the collegiate four, the Gaels finished together, taking ninth through 11th out of 20 teams with their A, B and C boats bettering last year’s 17th and 18th places. Saint Mary’s finished before teams such as USC, California, and Arizona State.
SMC’s collegiate pair finished 48th out of 51 teams beating out boats from Stanford and West Coast Conference rival San Diego.
Saint Mary’s next competes on Nov. 7 at Head of the Lagoon in Foster City.
