MORAGA, Calif. — The Saint Mary’s baseball team will hold its second Alumni Game under the guidance of head coach Eric Valenzuela on Jan. 29 at Louis Guisto Field, pitting past Gaels greats against the defending West Coast Conference champions of 2017.
The Alumni Game is scheduled for a first pitch at noon with Gaels both past and present taking full batting practice, infield and outfield, and a ceremonial first pitch. Admission to the game is free. Playing in the game is also free for all alumni who participate. The Alumni game is part of a full weekend for the Gaels that includes full team practice beginning on Jan. 27, the Annual First Pitch Dinner being held on Jan. 28, and the game on Jan. 29.
“Last year’s Alumni Game was a great event,” said Valenzuela. “We’re excited to do it again this year with a great group of returns and alumni on the field. We are always happy to have former players and coaches back on campus and taking part in the program. It shows an investment to our current guys, and they get to interact with them, and the support is just awesome.”
In the first alumni game under Valenzuela’s tenure last year, the 2016 Gaels topped the players from the past, 16-2. Zach Kirtley went 4 for 6 with two doubles and now-departed right-handed pitcher Corbin Burnes earned the win on the mound with two shutout innings and two strikeouts. Returners Edward Haus, Logan Steinberg and Charles Zaloumis all had two doubles each in the game.
Saint Mary’s baseball alumni interested in participating are encouraged to contact assistant coach Daniel Costanza via email at: email@example.com. In your email of interest for participating in the game, please include years played at Saint Mary’s.
