LOS ANGELES — Turnovers troubled the Saint Mary’s women’s basketball team Thursday, as host Loyola Marymount took advantage of loose balls to earn a 72-57 West Coast Conference victory at Gersten Pavilion.
The Gaels (15-11, 10-5 WCC) committed a season-high 27 turnovers in the game, including 17 in the first half alone. Loyola Marymount (12-14, 7-8 WCC) scored 32 points off of Gaels turnovers and built as large as a 31-point lead early in the fourth quarter.
Sydney Raggio logged her fourth double-double of the season with 12 points and 11 rebounds. Megan McKay led SMC with 16 points on perfect 7 for 7 shooting from the floor. Cheyanne Wallace led all players with 22 points. Jackie Johnson tallied a double-double for LMU with 19 points and 12 rebounds. Leslie Lopez-Wood gave the Lions three double-figure scorers with 14 points.
Saint Mary’s got out to an early 7-4 lead, but things changed drastically after the first quarter media timeout. LMU would march to a 30-13 halftime advantage thanks to a 26-6 run that spanned 1 1/2 quarters. SMC went 0 for 7 shooting in the last half of the 1st quarter and was just 3 for 15 during the duration of LMU’s run. The Gaels shot 41.5 percent in the game, but just 28.6 percent (6 for 21) in the first half.
Saint Mary’s did its best to come back in the fourth quarter, bringing the press defense and forcing seven turnovers. The Gaels shot 62.5 percent (10 for 16) with three 3-pointers in the fourth, cutting the 31-point deficit all the way down to 15.
The Gaels return to McKeon Pavilion for their last two home games of the season starting Saturday. Saturday is the women’s team’s annual “Pink Game,” joining a nationwide initiative for the Kay Yow Cancer Fund aimed at raising funds and awareness for women’s cancer. The Gaels will wear their pink Under Armour jerseys Saturday versus BYU. Thursday will mark Senior Night versus Pepperdine, starting at 6:30 p.m. Tickets are available for purchase on SMCGaels.com or by calling the SMC Ticket Office at (925) 631-GoTx. Both games will be streamed live on the Gaels’ Gameday Central page.
