MORAGA, Calif. — Selection Sunday finally came, and the Saint Mary’s men’s basketball team (28-4) rejoiced and celebrated in front of fans and media during the open-to-public “Selection Sunday Watch Party” in a lively McKeon Pavilion.
The moment built up for a dramatic finish, as the Gaels did not see their fate until the very last moments of the announcement broadcasted nationally on CBS.
Salt Lake City. Thursday. VCU. Saint Mary's is the seventh-seed while the Rams are the 10th seed.
This will be the first match in program history versus the Rams. Game times have yet to be announced.
The Gaels will be making their ninth overall appearance in the big dance, and sixth in the Randy Bennett era. This will be the first NCAA Tournament bid since the 2012-13 season, where the Gaels upended Middle Tennessee State, 67-54, in the play-in game at Dayton.
Nationally-ranked for the entirety of the season, the Gaels ran away with the new record for most consecutive weeks ranked in the AP and USA Today Coaches Polls (previous record was five weeks in 2008 and 2012.
This year’s group also surpassed the 1988-89 team for the highest-win percentage during the regular season. With an overall record of 26-3 (.897), the current Gaels beat out the 25-5 record (.833) of the 1988-89 squad.
VCU will be making its seventh straight NCAA Tournament appearance. This will be the 16th overall appearance for the Rams.
