FORT COLLINS, Colo. — The Saint Mary’s women’s basketball team will make its eighth straight postseason appearance beginning Thursday in the first round of the 2017 Women’s National Invitational Tournament, as the Gaels travel to Colorado State for a first round matchup.
The tip-off time for Thursday’s game will be announced in the coming days. The game is presented by Diablo Valley Insurance Agency. The two programs have not met since they played in back-to-back seasons in 2002-03 and 2003-04. Colorado State won both of those games, one in Moraga, Calif., and one in Fort Collins.
The Gaels (20-12) won 20 games for the sixth consecutive year in 2016-17 while finishing among the top-three in the West Coast Conference for the fourth time in the last five years. Colorado State (24-8) won the Mountain West Conference regular season title before falling in the conference tournament semifinals.
Saint Mary’s reached the West Coast Conference Tournament championship game on Tuesday for the first time since 2010-11. The Gaels fell to regular season champion Gonzaga, 86-75. 2016-17 has been another banner year for the Gaels, with five players recognized on the All-WCC teams and three receiving WCC All-Academic honors.
