MORAGA, Calif. — The #20/RV Saint Mary’s beach volleyball team faces off against bay area rivals this week with road games against Pacific, #11/14 California and San Jose State and a home game against San Francisco.

Saint Mary’s (6-3) plays Pacific (3-6) in Stockton at 3 p.m. on Tuesday and then return home for the season’s second home game in Moraga Commons to face San Francisco (0-8) at 3 p.m. on Thursday. SMC will then travel to Berkeley’s Clark Kerr Sand Courts on Friday to play #11/14 California (7-0) at 10 a.m. and San Jose State (6-3) at 4 p.m.

On Saturday, the Gaels notched a win against Portland 4-1 but failed to gain any traction against #3/3 UCLA, losing 5-0. This is the first 5-0 defeat of the season but the Gaels now sit with a 1-3 record against ranked opponents.

ABOUT PACIFIC

The Tigers (3-6) struggled to begin their fifth season but have won two of their last three matches. Pacific has lost both of their home games and will play two ranked opponents in#13/13 Grand Canyon and 20/RV Saint Mary’s at Raney Volleyball Courts this week. Their number one pair of Lexi Elman and Andie Shelton has gone 5-4 over the season.

ABOUT SAN FRANCISCO

The Dons (0-8) have lost every match 0-5 except for a neutral match against Portland in Monterey where their No. 3 duo of Carly Lowry and Dane Miller grabbed the first win of the season. San Francisco was ranked 17 in the DiG Magazine 2016 Final Poll after going 16-5 last season.

ABOUT CALIFORNIA

The Bears (7-0) are one of two ranked teams to remain undefeated in week three of action. California has beaten three ranked teams in Saint Mary’s, Cal Poly and Stanford and will play six more ranked teams throughout the season.  Nicole Anderson and Iya Lindahl at the No. 4 spot and Bridget Gustafson and Teya Neff at the No. 5 pair all sit at 6-0.

ABOUT SAN JOSE STATE

The Spartans (3-3) started the season 4-0 but have since lost three out of their last five games. San Jose State has, however, racked up five 5-0 victories. SJSU’s No. 1 tandem of Allison Meehan and Lyndi Scholl have gone 5-2 over the season with the two losses coming against UCLA and Grand Canyon.

The Gaels begin action in April against #1/1 USC in Santa Cruz on Saturday, April 1.
