TUCSON, Ariz. — Saint Mary's baseball designated hitter and right-handed pitcher Kevin Milam was named an All-American Thursday by Collegiate Baseball Newspaper, adding to his already decorated freshman season.
Milam was named to the Collegiate Baseball Newspaper All-American Third Team. He was one of the best two-way players in the country in just his first season of college baseball. Milam led the Gaels with 12 home runs and 55 RBIs while hitting .313 and slugging a team-best .547. One of the most feared cleanup hitters in the West Coast Conference, he hit two grand slams during the year and had two home runs in one game against Loyola Marymount on April 13.
Milam was also excellent on the mound. Early in the season he racked up nine saves and was ranked as high as No. 2 in the country in the category. He finished the year with those nine saves, a 3-1 record and 2.27 ERA in 39 2/3 innings pitched. He struck out 31 and only walked 11 while limiting opponents to a .191 batting average.
Milam was named the WCC Freshman of the Year on May 23 and also landed on both the all-WCC second team and the WCC all-freshman team. He earned WCC Player of the Week along with two National Player/Hitter of the Week honors (Collegiate Baseball Newspaper, NCBWA) for the final week of the regular season, May 15-21.
Milam was one of three WCC players to be named an All-American Tuesday by Collegiate Baseball Newspaper. Loyola Marymount's right-handed pitcher Cory Abbott was named a first team All-American. Gonzaga right-handed pitcher Eli Morgan earned second team All-American honors.
The Collegiate Baseball Newspaper Freshman All-American team is scheduled to be released on Wednesday.
