Moraga, CA – Saint Mary’s College will have three basketball players competing in the 2009 World University Summer Games (WUSG) in Belgrade, Serbia this July. Saint Mary’s will have men’s basketball players Carlin Hughes and Ben Allen, and women’s basketball player Louella Tomlinson representing Australia in this year’s WUSG event.

The World University Summer Games are held every two years under the banner of the International University Sports Federation (FISU), and in 2009 will be held in Belgrade, Serbia from July 1-12. With three players from Saint Mary’s competing for Australia, Saint Mary’s is the most represented school in this year’s university games for Australia.

Last season, Carlin Hughes played in all 32 games for the Gaels while making 23 starts during his senior season. Hughes was the Gaels’ fourth leading scorer, averaging 8.3 points per game, and he led the team with 117 assists and was second on the team with 54 made three-pointers. Ben Allen saw action in 28 games for the Gaels, all as a reserve. He finished his first competitive season for Saint Mary’s averaging 2.2 points and 1.8 rebounds per game in 9.1 minutes of action.

Hughes and Allen will make their second appearance in the World University Summer Games, while Tomlinson will be competing in the summer event for the first time.

Tomlinson was named the West Coast Conference Defender of the Year and to the All-WCC First Team following her sophomore season. Tomlinson led the Gaels in almost every statistical category, averaging 15.2 points, 9.2 rebounds, and 5.4 blocks per game, and was second on the team with 58 assists and third in steals with 28. Tomlinson tabbed a triple-double in points, rebounds, and blocks twice and was a three-time WCC Player of the Week selection.

Australia is the reigning WUSG Gold Medalist in the women's competition, having defeated Russia in the final of the 2007 event. The men's team finished the 2007 event in 17th place.

The women's team will undergo a training camp at the Australian Institute of Sport (AIS) from May 18-20 while the men's team will join the Australian Boomers at a training camp at the same venue from June 20-24 prior to departure for Europe.
