Creighton 2, Saint Mary’s 1
In their first game of the season, Saint Mary’s dropped a tough match against Creighton 2-1 as an error in the third inning would allow two Creighton runs to score and be the deciding factor in the game.
Senior Katie Moss pitched a stellar game, allowing only two hits and zero earned runs while striking out five. Abbey Mariani notched two hits in the loss including an RBI single in the second inning as part of a five hit effort for the Gaels. Freshman second baseman Nikki Alexander also had a solid game offensively with two walks at the top of the lineup.
Saint Mary’s 3, UTEP 1
The Gaels would earn their first victory of 2017 just a few hours after playing Creighton as they took down UTEP 3-1. Seven different Gaels recorded hits in the game with the biggest hit of the game being a two-run go ahead triple by Cara DiMercurio in the 6th inning.
After two groundouts to begin the inning, freshman Halle Sullivan drew a walk and stolen base for the Gaels and Mariani tacked on a single to set the stage for DiMercurio. The eventual game-winning triple to right center was DiMercurio’s first collegiate hit and runs batted in.
Moss pitched another strong seven innings, allowing one earned run on seven hits while striking out four. She also helped her cause on the basepaths in the sixth inning, scoring a run as a pinch runner for Mariana.
The Gaels will play two more games on Saturday in the second day of the Kajikawa Classic. At 9 a.m., Saint Mary’s will take on the University of New Mexico followed up by an 11:15 a.m. matchup against UT Arlington. Results and recaps can be found after the day’s action on SMCGaels.com.
