TEMPE, Ariz. — In the third and final day of the Kajikawa Classic, Saint Mary’s (2-4) dropped both games to Purdue (1-4) and Indiana (2-3) despite receiving quality pitching performances.

Purdue 6, Saint Mary’s 1

Errors proved to be costly in the Gaels’ first game of the day as Saint Mary’s fell to Purdue, 6-1. Out of the six runs charged to Gaels’ pitchers, only two were earned due in part to three errors by the team.

Katie Moss started on the mound for SMC and went 3.1 innings before Katlyn Whitt entered in relief. Moss allowed just one earned run but four total runs as the Gaels’ defense struggled. Freshman Nikki Alexander went 2-for-3 with a walk in the game and Hailey Sparacino picked up the only RBI of the game with a sacrifice fly in the first inning.

Indiana 2, Saint Mary’s 0

In the final game of the Kajikawa Classic, Saint Mary’s offense was halted by stellar pitching from Indiana’s Tara Trainer in a 2-0 loss. Trainer threw a complete game for Hoosiers and recorded nine strikeouts while allowing only one hit.

Eryn McCoy pitched a solid game for the Gaels but picked up her first loss of the season. The freshman went 6.2 innings, scattering nine hits and two walks while surrendering just two earned runs. Sparacino broke up Trainer’s no-hitter in the sixth inning with a single to right field and Jaymee Campbell managed to work two walks during the game for the offense.

Saint Mary’s will play in another tournament next weekend in Palm Springs, Calif. at the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic. The Gaels will play in five games during the three-day tournament and face off Illinois, CSUN, and Utah Valley among others. Results and recaps can be found at the end of each day at SMCGaels.com.
