MORAGA, Calif. — After dropping the first game by a single run, Saint Mary’s (15-20, 1-1 WCC) used a clutch moment in the second game to claim a come from behind 2-1 win, and split the day’s action versus Bay Area rival Santa Clara (9-24, 1-1 WCC).

The top of the Gaels lineup did major damage in both games with the likes of Nikki Alexander, Hailey Sparacino and Dylan Linton.

Alexander and Sparacino led the base running efforts for SMC, each scoring four runs on the day. Leading off the lineup, Alexander also brought in a RBI in the second game. Sparacino notched two RBIs in the first game to lead the Gaels.

Game 1 -- SMC 4, SCU 5

Katie Moss got the nod in the circle, and pitched 5.1 innings for Saint Mary’s. The senior (8-8) struck out six batters while giving up just one walk. Moss also gave up seven hits and four earned runs.

The Broncos got on the board early, scoring two runs in the top of the first inning, as Taylor Burns delivered a two-run homer to center field.

The Gaels quickly answered back in the bottom of the first, with a Sparacino single to drive in Alexander. SMC would eventually tie the game in the second inning, as Bailey Lotz grounded out a well placed ball to deliver in the second Gaels run.

After SCU reclaimed a one run lead, SMC tied the game in the fifth, 3-3. Alexander led off with a double and advanced to third. With one out, Sparacino delivered another hit to drive home Alexander, and tie the game.

The Broncos would end up with the 5-3 lead heading into the last frame, as SCU blasted its second homer of the game. Down two runs, the Gaels would nearly complete a comeback in the bottom of the seventh.

With two outs and two runners on base, Abbey Mariani hit a floating single to right field to bring in a single run, and cut the deficit, 5-4. The Broncos would ultimately hold the lead and claim the win in game one.

Game 2 -- SMC 2, SCU 1

Katlyn Whitt started game two and pitched her fourth complete game of the year. The junior (5-6) gave up just one earned run in the outing, and showed impeccable poise while getting out of multiple jams.

All tied 1-1, the Gaels delivered clutch hitting in the bottom of the seventh inning. With two outs and no runners on base, Linton hit a singled down the first base line. Sparacino followed up with another single and with runners on first and second, Hannah Chew went opposite field for the game-winner.

Game three between the Gaels and Broncos is scheduled for tomorrow at 12 p.m. at Cottrell Field. Live stats for the series deciding game can be found here or on the Gaels softball schedule.
