LOS ANGELES — In the series finale, Saint Mary's (16-26, 2-7 WCC) reeled off six hits but could not claim the win over LMU (19-29, 5-7 WCC) as the Lions prevailed with solid pitching, 3-1.
The Gaels will face Stanford on Wednesday, May 3 for its last non-conference match of the season. SMC will travel to Palo Alto, Calif. for the game as first pitch is set for 6 p.m. PT. Left-fielder Eryn McCoy led the Gaels bats Sunday morning going 2-for-3 with a run. Each of the first four batters of the Gaels lineup recorded a single hit during the game.
Katelyn Whitt (6-8) got the start in the circle for the Gaels and pitched 3.2 innings. In her outing, she gave up six hits with three earned runs. The junior continued to force easy outs with eight more groundouts.
Senior Katie Moss pitched 2.1 innings in her attempt to relieve Whitt. Moss pitched shutout innings with two strikeouts and no hits.
Scoreless all the way into the fourth, the Lions broke the barrier with a three run inning. LMU got on the board with three hits, one of them being a 2-run home run.
Down 3-0, the Gaels answered back with one run in the top-5th. With runners on second and third, Nikki Alexander delivered her 14th RBI of the year with a single up the middle.
The Gaels hit two more hits in the sixth inning, but could not overcome the deficit as LMU claimed the two run victory and series win over the Gaels.
Saint Mary's will return to Cottrell Field for its season finale versus WCC powerhouse BYU. The Gaels will host the Cougars for a three game series from Friday-Saturday, May 12-13.
