STOCKTON, Calif. — In the season' second to last series, Saint Mary's (16-28, 2-9 WCC) got off to a rocky start, dropping a pair of contests to the Pacific Tigers (26-24, 9-5 WCC) at Bill Simoni Field.
Pacific 3, Saint Mary's 0
In a big time pitchers duel, Pacific used a three-run sixth inning to claim the series opening win over Saint Mary's.
Tied 0-0 heading into the bottom of the sixth, the Tigers broke the barrier to put up three runs. Pacific started the inning with a leadoff double, followed by a RBI single. Gustafson of Pacific hit a 2-RBI homer to deliver the last two runs of the game.
Katie Moss (8-12) pitched six innings in the outing and gave up just four hits. The senior struckout seven batters, forced seven flyouts and three groundouts.
Leadoff batter and impressive freshman Nikki Alexander went hitless for the first time in 11 games. The first year player was also in the middle of an impressive streak where she reached base safely in 24 straight games.
Pacific 6, Saint Mary's 2
In the second game of the doubleheader, the Gaels offense struggled up until the top of the seventh inning which saw the team score two runs.
Down 6-0, Chew hit a double to the left-center gap. With the runner on second, Cara DiMercurio took a 1-0 count over the left field wall for the 2-run homer. The home run was DiMercurio's third of the campaign.
Junior Katlyn Whitt (6-8) got the start in the circle and pitched four innings. Whitt surrendered eight hits, five earned runs and faced 20 batters. Izzy Ortiz came into the game to relieve Whitt as the freshman pitched two innings. She gave up just one hit and retired seven out of eight batters she faced.
Alexander delivered her 48th hit of the season after going 1-for-3. SMC mustered four hits in the outing compared to nine from the Tigers.
Pacific jumped to an early 1-0 lead, but scored five in the fourth frame en route to the 6-2 win.
