FULLERTON, Calif. — The ball was flying high and far Monday for the Saint Mary's baseball team, as the Gaels bashed seven extra-base hits – including four home runs – on their way to routing No. 13/14 Cal State Fullerton, 12-4, at Goodwin Field and earning an important non-conference victory as they head toward the postseason.
Saint Mary's (34-18) drubbing of the nationally ranked Titans (31-18) boosted their RPI ranking into the top-60, according to WarrenNolan.com. It was SMC's fourth win over a nationally ranked team this season after taking two from then-No. 10 Washington in February and defeating then-No. 23 UC Santa Barbara 4-1 on Feb. 28 (Baseball America rankings).
Saint Mary's showed no ill-effects in playing their fourth road game in four days, and doing so after playing 29 total innings on Saturday and Sunday. Edward Haus (3 for 5), Zach Kirtley, (3 for 3), Brett Rasso (3 for 5) and Jackson Thoreson (2 for 5) accounted for all of the Gaels' extra-base hits and drove in nine of their runs.
All three of Rasso's hits were for extra bags, including his second home run of the season and his career in the third inning to make it 2-0. Kirtley went back-to-back with Rasso in the third, hitting his fifth long-ball of the year to make it 3-0. It was Haus' fifth homer of 2017 that started the Gaels' offensive outburst with a solo shot in the second that made it 1-0.
Joey Fiske also had a multi-hit game (2 for 6) to extend his hit streak to 10 games and give the Gaels five multi-hit performances on the night. SMC totaled 16 hits while getting base knocks from eight of nine starters.
Ty Madrigal (5-3) threw 6 2/3 innings after getting the save at Pepperdine on Sunday. He struck out four and allowed all four of CSF's runs. Andrew Hansen was nearly perfect in his 2 1/3 innings of relief. He held the Titans scoreless over the final two-plus frames, striking out four, walking none and only allowing two hits.
SMC hosts Santa Clara for a three-game series starting Friday with a spot in the West Coast Conference Tournament on the line. Entering the weekend in a tie for the fourth and final spot, the Gaels can clinch with a sweep of the Broncos, or finishing in a tie with San Diego. Tickets are available for purchase on SMCGaels.com or by calling the SMC Ticket Office at (925) 631-GoTx.
