MORAGA, Calif. — Saint Mary's women's volleyball player Morgan Hughes has been named the SMC Muscle Milk Student-Athlete of the Week for the week of Sept. 4-10 after helping lead the Gaels to consecutive sweeps in their home opening weekend.
Hughes led the Gaels (4-4) in nearly every single category on both offense and defense, powering SMC to back-to-back sweeps over Fresno State and CSUN. Hughes hit a team-best .514 with 19 kills - the most of any Gael. She averaged 3.17 kills per set. Hughes hit an impressive .647 with 11 kills and no errors Saturday versus CSUN.
She also led the team with 10 blocks, an average of 1.67 per set, including three solo stops. Hughes was also strong on the serve, posting a SMC-high six aces. It was her ace Saturday that clinched the first set and got the Gaels rolling towards a 3-0 sweep over the Matadors.
Saint Mary's clashes this week with Pac-12 Bay Area foes California and Stanford. It's a matchup versus the East Bay rival Golden Bears at 7 p.m. Friday in Berkeley. The Gaels then host defending national champion and No. 4-ranked Stanford at 7 p.m. Saturday. Tickets are available for purchase on SMCGaels.com or by calling the SMC Ticket Office at (925) 631-GoTx.
