MORAGA, Calif. -- Construction began last week on the renovation of a multi-use field adjacent to Saint Mary's Stadium that will provide year-round field space for recreational and athletics programs at Saint Mary's College.
The field, designed by Verde Design, Inc. and installed by Carone & Company, Inc., will feature a state-of-the-art Mondo Sport Turf artificial surface that will provide field use regardless of weather conditions. Construction workers broke ground on the renovation on June 6 and are expected to be finished by early August.
"This multi-use field is a critical piece of the Athletics and Recreation Corridor project," said Saint Mary's Director of Athletics & Recreation Mark Orr. "The College is committed to providing recreational, sports club and intramural field space to the student population. With the upcoming construction of the Joseph L. Alioto Recreation Center and the baseball field, we needed to create suitable year-round field space for outdoor activities. This project is the first step toward providing a variety of first-class recreational facilities for our student body, club sports, intramurals and intercollegiate athletic programs."
The lighted field will serve as a practice and competition site for the women's lacrosse program as well as a practice and training facility for various club sport and intercollegiate sport programs. It will also be utilized extensively for intramural programs and SMC community use.
