MORAGA, Calif. -- Last week, junior Mac McClung achieved one of his pre-season goals - winning his first collegiate golf tournament.  Today, the Fremont native can chalk-up another milestone as he was honored as the Saint Mary's Student-Athlete of the Week.

McClung blew away the competition at last week's Firestone Invitational in Akron, Ohio.  He shot two of the best rounds of his college career and finished with rounds of 71-66-68 for an 11-under par 205 and defeated second-place Chase Wright of Indiana by four strokes.

He also led the Gaels to a tie for their second tournament victory in just four events in the young season.  Saint Mary's returns to action next week at the Cabo Collegiate in San Jose del Cabo, Mexico.

"Mac played really well last week and he deserved to be honored as the SMC Student-Athlete of the Week," said Saint Mary's Golf Coach Scott Hardy.  "He simply dominated the competition and, as the tournament went on, his confidence grew.  Everyone is really happy for Mac and I think you'll see more great things from him this season."

McClung has played in all four events for the Gaels this season and has the second-lowest stroke average on the team.  At Firestone, he registered 16 birdies and just five bogeys over the 54 holes to earn his first collegiate win, something he mentioned as a goal in a recent Gaels Spotlight on SMCGaels.com.
