MORAGA, Calif. – The Saint Mary’s softball team takes part in its third consecutive tournament on the road when it travels to Honolulu for the Bank of Hawaii Invitational on February 21-23. Hawaii and Saint Mary’s are joined by North Carolina and San Jose State.
Saint Mary’s opens the Invitational on Friday, taking on North Carolina at 6:00 p.m. (PT) and Hawaii at 8:00 p.m. (PT). Last year the Gaels opened the 2013 season at last year’s Oceanic Time Warner Cable Paradise Classic and played against Washington, Mississippi, Alabama-Birmingham and Hawaii.
The Gaels enter the week tied for first-place in terms of wins and losses, after 10 games this season. Saint Mary’s continues to show improvement , including a 4-1 victory over No. 23 California last week. It was SMC’s first-ever win over the Golden Bears. Saint Mary’s also dropped a close 3-2, 8-inning game to tournament host San Diego State.
Last week Sarah Lira was named the WCC Pitcher of the Week. Lira was the leader on the mound for the Gaels, tossing 18.2 innings, allowing 13 hits, four earned runs and seven strikeouts, she won two games, with wins over South Dakota and No. 23 California. For the week she had a 1.50 ERA.
Lira also leads the Gaels in hitting with a .467 average. Brittany Sabatini holds a .342 average and leads SMC with 17 total bases. Erica Musgrave (.323), Cassidy Szeredy (.310) and Andrea Hazel (.300) are the other starters hitting at least .300. As a team the Gaels are hitting at a .267 clip, while opponents are hitting at a .271 mark. SMC has a team ERA of 3.33, while opponents are at 3.01.
