In the first inning of the first game, the Gaels got into a jam as SJSU had runners on second and third with one out. Sarah Lira got the next two hitters to pop out and fly out to keep the Spartans off the board.
The Gaels led 2-0 after the first inning as Erica Musgrave hit a two-run home run to left field. The Gaels sailed through the first four innings with the 2-0 lead as Lira was pitching well.
It was not until the fifth inning which saw SJSU tie it up with a two RBI double. The teams would remain tied until the seventh inning.
The first two SJSU hitters walked and advanced to second and third with one out. A fielder’s choice RBI would score the go-ahead run and give SJSU the 3-2 lead with two outs in the inning. The final out was one that avoided SMC as the Spartans went on to score six runs in the inning and essentially put the game out of reach at 8-2.
The Gaels and Spartans turned around and faced each other again, this time SJSU came out on top by a 3-0 score. The Gaels were limited to just three hits in the game as Lira, Cassidy Szeredy and Christine Torrise had the Gaels’ only hits.
Lujane Mussadi pitched good enough to get the win, going the complete game and giving up just one earned run. The Gaels will play at 2:00 p.m. (approx) on Sunday, against the loser of the North Carolina and Hawaii match-up.
