SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- Senior Eric Grimberg shot a one-over par 141 to lead the Saint Mary's golf team to a second-place finish after the first day of competition at the Fighting Irish Gridiron Classic at The Warren Golf Course.

Despite difficult weather conditions that featured rain and heavy winds throughout the day, the Gaels perservered and sit just three strokes behind the University of Houston after the tournament's first two rounds.  Saint Mary's shot 286-292 for a two-round total of 18-over par.  The University of Texas at Arlington is three strokes behind the Gaels, while the University of Minnesota and the University of Missouri are four strokes behind.

Grimberg, a native of Portland, shot 71-70 for the two rounds and was one of only eight players in the 70-player field to shoot even-par or better in the wind-swept afternoon round.  The inclement weather was apparent in his hole-by-hole scoring as Grimberg scored six birdies, two bogeys and a quadruple-bogey during the up-and-down round.

"It certainly was an up-and-down day," said SMC head coach Scott Hardy.  "We played well in stretches and in other times we struggled.  Overall, I think we can, and will, play better - particularly as the season progresses.  The weather was a factor today.  It was very windy and wet, at times.  It should, however, serve as good preparation for Tahoe next week and Firestone the week after that."

"Tomorrow will be a good test for our team.  We are in the final pairing with a chance to win the tournament, so I am anxious to see how we handle being in that position."

Junior Mac McClung sits in a tie for 16th place after shooting 73-72 for a 5-over par 145 on the day.  Classmate Ben Geyer shot 72-75 for a 7-over par 147 and enters tomorrow's final round in a tie for 23rd place.

Senior Anders Engell shot 70-78 and is tied for 30th place at 8-over par 148.  Freshman Jonathan De Los Reyes is tied for 35th after shooting 74-75 for a 9-over par 149.

The 12-team field will return to the course tomorrow for the tournament's final round at 9:24 a.m.  The Gaels are paired with Houston and Texas-Arlington and will start on hole No. 1.
