BOISE, Idaho - A day after a season opening win against Eastern Washington, the No. 62 Saint Mary's men's tennis team came up against a tougher lineup on Sunday and fell to No. 49 Boise State, 5-2. The Broncos (1-0) swept doubles play and won four-of-six singles matches to claim the win over the Gaels (1-1).
In doubles action, the Gaels were close on all three courts but couldn't come up with a win as each SMC duo lost by a score of 8-6 to their Bronco opponents.
The Broncos added onto their 1-0 lead and claimed the match with singles wins on courts one, two, and five.
Senior Sherif Hamdy and junior Saad Benkirane won their second straight singles matches of the season and earned the two SMC points on the day with super tiebreaker wins after the team match was already decided. Hamdy defeated Scott Sears 5-7, 6-4, (10-7) on court three, while Benkirane topped Garrett Patton 6-7, 6-3, (10-6).
The Gaels will return to action next weekend when they participate in the ITA Kick-Off Weekend hosted by Stanford. Saint Mary's will take on the Cardinal on Friday, January 27 and take on either Boise State or Santa Clara the following day.
