MORAGA, Calif. - The Saint Mary's women's tennis team got back to their winning ways on Saturday and opened up West Conference play with a convincing victory over Bay Area rival San Francisco. The Gaels won all three doubles matches and dominated singles play to earn the 7-0 win.
No. 36 Saint Mary's improves to 6-5 with the win, while the Dons dropped to 2-7 this season.
The Gaels jumped out to a quick 1-0 lead and made things look easy in doubles play. Senior Anna Chkhikvishvili and junior Catherine Isip teamed up for the first time this season on court two to defeat Yurie Hashiguchi and Milica Hadzi Tanovic, 8-2. Saint Mary's then got a pair of 8-4 wins on courts one and three to complete the doubles sweep. Sophomore's Jenny Jullien and Jade Frampton defeated Julia Wartenburger and Blair Reed on court one, while Carla Lindlar and Elizabeth Searl teamed up for the first time this season to win at the No. 3 spot.
The Gaels continued with the momentum from doubles play to dominate singles action and won all but one set on the day. No. 112 Isip got the ball rolling in singles play and made quick work of Wartenburger on court one, 6-2, 6-0. No. 97 Jullien improved to 8-2 this season and claimed her fifth straight match with a 6-4, 6-1 win over Tanovic at the No. 2 spot. Freshman Catherine Leduc captured the team win for SMC on court four, defeating Hashiguchi, 6-2, 6-2.
Frampton earned the next point for the Gaels on court five with a 6-1, 6-4 win over McMahon, while Chkhikvishvili topped Akerbrant at the No. 3 spot, 2-6, 6-2, 6-1. Lindlar won her third straight match and rounded out the clean sweep for SMC, defeating Reed, 6-1, 6-4, on court six.
Saint Mary's will return to action tomorrow when they travel to Stockton to take on Pacific. The match is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m. from the Hal Nelson Tennis Courts.
