STANFORD, Calif.- After a marathon win yesterday, Alex Poorta could not continue the momentum today and fell in the second round of the NCAA Singles Championships. The senior from Amsterdam concluded her collegiate career today with a 6-1, 6-4 loss to Baylor's Nina Secerbegovic at Stanford's Taube Tennis Center.
Secerbegovic jumped out to an early lead in the first set, winning the first three games. After Poorta broke her serve and won the fourth game, Secerbegovic won the next three to claim the first set 6-1.
Secerbegovic once again gained an early lead in the second set and led Poorta 4-2. After Poorta closed things to 4-3, the pair traded games before Secerbegovic claimed her sixth game to earn the 6-1, 6-4 win.
Despite the loss, the tremendous Saint Mary's career of Poorta should not be overlooked. She was the first SMC tennis player to ever be named WCC Player of the Year and she also was named to the All-WCC First Team for the third straight year. Poorta is also the first player in program history to be invited to the NCAA Singles Championships.
