SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. – The Saint Mary’s baseball team got timely hitting and a complete game shutout from Ben Griset in a 6-0 win over San Francisco on Thursday afternoon at Benedetti Diamond.

With the win, Saint Mary’s improves to 8-18, 2-3 West Coast Conference, while San Francisco drops to 11-14, 3-4 WCC.

Griset was masterful and went the distance, going 9.0 innings, allowing four hits, no runs, two walks and 10 strikeouts. He threw 110 pitches, 77 for strikes.

With the Gaels leading 1-0 in the fourth, SMC plated three runs, two coming on a two-out bases loaded single by Brenden Kalfus.

With a 4-0 lead, Griset cruised through the middle innings, well into the final frames. He got into a little trouble in the fourth inning, giving up two hits, but fortunately two were out and he struck out the final USF batter to get out of the inning.

The Gaels added insurance runs in the ninth. Collin Ferguson drew a bases loaded walk and Kalfus added an unearned run to give SMC a 6-0 lead.

Griset gave up a leadoff single in the ninth but no damage was done as Griset finished off the shutout.

The Gaels pounded out 12 hits on the afternoon, including multi-hit games by Kalfus, Cole Norton and Ricky Boas.

Saint Mary’s is back in action at USF at 3:00 p.m. on Friday afternoon.
