MORAGA, Calif. - The Saint Mary's baseball team used an 8-run third inning to set the tone in an 8-3 win over Santa Clara on Friday afternoon at Louis Guisto Field.
With the win, Saint Mary's improves to 15-26, 6-7 West Coast Conference, while Santa Clara drops to 10 -29, 0-16 WCC.
SMC sent 12 batters to the plate in the third, pounding out eight hits and scoring eight runs in the inning.
Markus Melgosa broke it open with a bases-clearing double, scoring Darian Ramage, Riley Heinzer and DonAndre Clark. SMC was not done as Anthony Villa and Collin Ferguson added RBI. Ricky Boas then tripled to right field, driving in a pair of runs and SMC hung an eight spot on the scoreboard.
SCU added runs in the fourth and fifth, including a two-run home run in the fifth by Justin Viele, brining the score to 8-3 SMC.
Ben Griset (4-2) earned the win for the Gaels, going 6.0 innings, allowing seven hits, three runs and striking out six.
Gary Cornish earned his first collegiate save, going 3.0 innings, allowing one hit and nothing else.
The loss went to Reece Karalus (0-7) who lasted 2.2 innings. Chris Mendoza pitched well in relief for SCU, going 5.1 innings and allowing three hits while striking out five.
Every SMC starter recorded a hit, which included Brenden Kalfus who extended his hitting streak to 23 games. In the fourth inning, Kalfus singled through the right side to extend the streak.
Saint Mary's is back in action on Saturday at 1:00 p.m. when it takes on SCU in game two of the three game set.
