MALIBU, Calif. –The Saint Mary’s baseball team used three big innings to capture a 10-3 win at Pepperdine on Sunday, and in the process winning the key West Coast Conference series. The win results in the Gaels playing for a spot in the WCC Tournament next week at BYU.

With the win, Saint Mary’s improves to 21-30, 11-10 WCC, while Pepperdine drops to 24-23, 10-11 WCC. Gonzaga, San Francisco and San Diego have clinched three spots in the WCC tourney, while the fourth will go to either BYU (12-9 WCC), SMC (11-10), PEP (10-11) or LMU (10-11). BYU and SMC will square off during the final weekend of WCC action as the Gaels took 2-of-3 against PEP, but lost 2-of-3 to LMU.

Brenden Kalfus went 2-for-5 with five RBI, extending his WCC record hitting streak to 33 games. The streak is also tied for the longest streak in the nation in 2013. Kalfus will have a shot to extend the streak on Tuesday against UC Davis.

Cole Norton also played a strong game for the Gaels, going 1-for-4 with a two-RBI double. He also threw out a runner on the base paths. Markus Melgosa, Christopher Akmon and Ricky Boas had multi-hit games, as SMC recorded 12 hits against PEP pitchers.

On the mound, Ryan Brockett (5-5) took over the team lead in wins this season, going 6.0 innings, allowing five hits, one run, two walks and five strike outs. He threw 90 pitches, 60 for strikes.

Gary Cornish and Kelsey Outram finished off the win in relief for SMC.

The Gaels got a two-RBI double by Melgosa in the third as part of a three-run inning, as SMC took a 3-0 lead.

With SMC up 5-0, the Gaels pushed across five more runs in the sixth on two-RBI doubles by Norton and Kalfus. Akmon also had an RBI single in the inning as the Gaels led 10-0 in the sixth and cruised to the win.

Saint Mary’s is back in action on Tuesday when it hosts UC Davis at 3:00 p.m. The game is the final home game of the 2013 season for the Gaels. SMC will then play three games at BYU, beginning on Thursday night in Provo.
