With the win, Saint Mary’s improves to 15-3, 5-2 West Coast Conference, while Pepperdine drops to 5-12, 1-5 WCC.
Saint Mary’s was led by Jackie Nared with 27 points and nine rebounds, while Kate Gaze added 13 points and five assists. Danielle Mauldin had her 14th double-double of the year with 11 points and 13 rebounds in just 26 minutes of action. Mauldin is now 20 rebounds shy of both the SMC and WCC career rebounding mark.
The Gaels played shorthanded with only eight players available to play. Amanda Arter made her first collegiate start, while Shannon Mauldin also started. Arter finished with four points and three rebounds in 24 minutes, while Shannon Mauldin finished with eight points and six rebounds in 31 minutes.
After Nared’s jumper made it 22-5 at the 11:21 mark, the Gaels would not let up. The SMC pressure defense had the Gaels ahead 40-13 with 1:48 remaining in the half after Gaze knocked down her second three-pointer of the half. SMC led 42-16 at the break.
With her two first-half three-pointers, Gaze passed former teammate Jasmine Smith for fourth all-time in school history with 160 career three-pointers.
In the second-half, the SMC lead never got below 23 points in the 71-48 win.
Saint Mary’s converted 26-of-36 free-throws and outrebounded Pepperdine 46-32. SMC held the Waves to 30.6 percent from the field.
Saint Mary’s is back in action on Saturday when it hosts Loyola Marymount at 1:00 p.m. in McKeon Pavilion.
