MORAGA, Calif. – The Saint Mary’s women’s basketball team got big games from its seniors on Senior Day, as the trio combined for 62 points and 29 rebounds. The Gaels would end up falling to the Broncos who hit 12 three-pointers which proved to be the difference.

Saint Mary’s was led by Danielle Mauldin with 24 points and 16 rebounds, her 20th double-double of the year. Jackie Nared added 21 points and 11 rebounds, her eighth double-double of the year. Kate Gaze scored 17 points and converted 4-for-4 from the free-throw line, extending her made free-throw streak to 29 without a miss.

Saint Mary’s drops to 20-7, 10-6 West Coast Conference. With the Pilots loss to Gonzaga, the Gaels are assured no worse than a five-seed in the WCC Tournament in two weeks.

Santa Clara was led by Montana Walters with 26 points and Nici Gilday with 23 points.

The Gaels built their largest lead of the game in the first half at 27-19 after Nared scored in the paint. The Gaels led 34-30, but SCU finished the half strong taking a 40-39 lead at the break.

In the second half, the Gaels led 52-50 at the 16:11 mark, but it would be their last lead of the game. It was Santa Clara’s afternoon when it banked in a three-pointer after the Gaels played strong defense to wind down the shot clock. The banked three pointer gave the Broncos a 10-point lead at the 5:58 mark.

Saint Mary’s pulled within 76-72 at the 1:21 mark, but SCU was too strong from the free throw line down the stretch. SMC was not able to force the game back to a one possession game the rest of the way.

Saint Mary’s plays its final two WCC games next week at Gonzaga and Portland.
