SAN BRUNO, Calif. --- With the help of its 10 member institutions, the West Coast Conference (WCC) will be hosting WCC "Kids Day" at the Orleans Arena in Las Vegas, Nev. on Friday, March 7th from 3:30-5:30 p.m.
The event will benefit the After-School All-Stars program in Las Vegas and will focus on staying active and eating healthy. This year, 750 youth from the Clark County School District will participate in a basketball clinic hosted by WCC men’s and women’s basketball players, coaches and cheer squads and with the help of Whole Foods and Gameday Souvenirs, will receive a nutritional meal and event T-shirt before attending the women's quarterfinal game of the 2014 WCC Basketball Championship.
"WCC Kids Day is one of our best opportunities to engage with the community of Las Vegas as part of the WCC Men’s & Women’s Basketball Championships," said WCC Commissioner Jamie Zaninovich. "We hope this event inspires the Las Vegas youth to stay active, whether through basketball or not, as they spend time with and learn hands-on from our very own student-athletes, coaches and administrators."
The 2014 WCC Kids Day event is the sixth consecutive community service project that the Conference has put together as part of its Men's and Women's Basketball Championships and the conference-wide celebration of the WCC in Las Vegas. Each year, members from all WCC athletic department staffs team up to give back to the community in an impactful way, and due to the new tournament format this year, basketball teams will now be available to volunteer their time as well, making it the first time that WCC basketball players and coaches can actively engage in Kids Day.
"We are so grateful to have a membership and partners that are committed to giving back their time and energy to the community," said Assistant Commissioner and Event Coordinator Stefanie Ordoveza. "To have our basketball teams in attendance this year is not only a testament to our schools’ core values but also brings the message of staying active and eating healthy to life in a fun and interactive way.”
This year, the West Coast Conference has partnered with Whole Foods and Gameday Souvenirs to assist with providing the hundreds of meals and T-shirts for Kids Day. Whole Foods has supported a large number of events around the nation, in hopes of educating families and kids about healthy eating. This is the first year that they will be involved with WCC Kids Day. Gameday Souvenirs, the official supplier of WCC championship merchandise, has outfitted the kids every year since its inception.
Since 2009, WCC Kids Day has served over 4,500 students from the After-School All-Stars program. This event is part of a larger conference-wide commitment to hosting an engaging community service event in connection with its six WCC Championships --- baseball, basketball, cross country, golf, rowing and tennis.
