Cal State Bakersfield received the WNIT automatic berth out of the Western Athletic Conference.
Saint Mary’s enjoyed a record-breaking start to the 2013-14 season and enters the WNIT with a 22-9 mark. The Gaels spent much of the season with an RPI in the 30s, and finished the year on the NCAA tournament bubble. According to ESPN.com “bracketology,” the Gaels were in the “next four out” group in Charlie Crème’s bracketology.
The Gaels rallied to defeat San Diego in the West Coast Conference quarterfinals, then lost to No.18 Gonzaga in the semifinals in a close game, 68-60. It was Gonzaga’s (the eventual champion), closest game in the tournament.
Saint Mary’s (RPI 48), has several impressive wins this year. This includes wins over Gonzaga (11), a road win at Pac-12 champion USC (34), BYU (38), San Diego twice (53), Alabama (78) and Washington (88).
Saint Mary’s won four games against teams in the NCAA Tournament (Gonzaga, BYU, USC, CSU Northridge).
This is SMC’s ninth ever postseason appearance and eighth since 2000. The Gaels reached the NCAA Tournament in 1999 and 2001. SMC has WNIT apperances in 2000, 02, 10, 11, 12, 13 and now 14. Last year the Gaels reached the WNIT quarterfinals, defeating Seattle at home, Northern Colorado and BYU on the road, then falling by three points at home to Utah.
