DENVER, Colo. - The Saint Mary's lacrosse team got off to a strong start but could not withstand a Denver scoring run as the Pioneers defeated the Gaels 20-6 on Friday afternoon in Denver.
With the loss, Saint Mary's drops to 1-4, 0-3 Mountain Pacific Sports Federation, while Denver improves to 1-1, 1-0 MPSF.
Amanda Cross led the Gaels with four goals, while Krista Morgan and Juliet Munroe also scored for the Gaels.
In the first half, Cross scored three of her four first half goals in the first 10 minutes of the game. Saint Mary's would take the lead 4-3 after Morgan scored on an assist from Rachel Minarovich with 18:44 left until half. From that point, the Pioneers would score eight of the next nine goals to take the comfortable 11-5 lead at the break.
In the second-half, Denver built on its run, after ending the half on an 8-1 run, the Pioneers began the second half on a 9-0 run to cruise to the victory. Munroe's late second half goal put an end to Denver's 13-0 scoring run.
Denver outshot SMC 43-13 and led 18-12 in ground balls. Denver won 18 of the 27 draw controls and took 13 free position shots.
Kathleen Worsdale had 16 saves for the Gaels. SMC forced 15 turnovers but committed 27 turnovers. Jillian Chong led the Gaels with four draw controls and Holly Hayes led SMC with five ground balls and five turnovers caused.
Saint Mary's is back in action on Sunday when it faces Marist in Denver at 3:00 p.m. (PT).
