DENVER, Colo. - The Saint Mary's lacrosse team rallied to tie the game in the second-half, but Quinnipiac came away with an 18-14 win over the Gaels in Denver on Monday afternoon. Amanda Cross scored six goals, but it was not enough to overcome QU's Marissa Caroleo who scored eight times.
With the loss, Saint Mary's drops to 1-6, while Quinnipiac improves to 1-1.
In addition to Cross' six scores, Mariah Walk added three goals while Krista Morgan scored twice. Jaclyn Biggers, Caroline Mahony and Jillian Chong also scored for SMC.
The Gaels trailed 10-6 at halftime and were outshot 20-14 by the Bobcats. Saint Mary's chipped away in the second-half, coming within two goals on several occasions. Trailing 14-11, the Gaels got two goals from Cross and the equalizer from Walk with 8:06 remaining and the score at 14-14.
Quinnipiac withstood the SMC run however, as the Bobcats scored the games' final four goals. QU took the lead 15-14 with 7:28 remaining, then added goals at the 5:50 mark, 1:53 and :56 second marks to win the game by an 18-14 score.
The Gaels did have two leads in the first half as Mahony gave SMC its first lead with 26:54 remaining at 3-2. Later, Biggers scored at the 22:29 mark to give SMC a 5-4 advantage. Quinnipiac outscored SMC 6-1 to end the first half for the 10-6 lead at the break.
Saint Mary's is back in action on Thursday when it hosts Long Island University at 3:30 p.m. at Recreation Field.
