MORAGA, Calif. – The Saint Mary’s lacrosse team did not have a problem scoring but dropped a 20-14 decision to California on Thursday night in the season opener for both teams.
The Gaels were led by Allie DeBruhl with four goals on just five shots. Jaclyn Biggers scored three times, while Krista Morgan and Meagan Bennett scored two apiece. Megan Zummo, Rachel Minarovich and Anne Neuweiler also scored.
Cal was led by Amelia Burke with five goals and Bella Huther with four goals.
Cal scored the first three goals of the game, while SMC scored three of the next five goals. Biggers got the Gaels on the board at the 19:59 mark. SMC pulled within 7-5 after Biggers scored her second goal of the game at the 11:24 mark.
Cal took a 12-8 lead at the break, scoring with just under two minutes to play in the half.
The Golden Bears outscored the Gaels 8-6 in the second half, scoring the first three goals of the second stanza.
Saint Mary’s took 26 shots in the game, compared to 37 shots by the Golden Bears. SMC had a 21-15 edge in ground balls, while Cal had a 25-10 edge in draw controls.
Katherine Herzog and Sydney Pinello both played in goal for SMC. Herzog tallied six saves while Pinello had two.
Saint Mary’s is back in action on Sunday when it hosts Harvard at noon.
