LAX | Strong Start Not Enough Against Aztecs

MORAGA, Calif. – The Saint Mary’s lacrosse team got off to a quick start but fell to San Diego State in a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation match-up on Sunday afternoon at Recreation Field.

Saint Mary’s was led by Allie DeBruhl with four goals, while Jaclyn Biggers scored twice. Anna Turpit, Krstia Morgan and Meagan Bennett also added goals for SMC. Megan Zummo had two assists and six draw controls.

San Diego State was led by Lauren Maack, Felice Artuso, Katie Gill and Andrea Killebrew with three scores apiece.

SMC opened the game with three goals in 54 seconds to take a 3-0 lead. DeBruhl scored twice in the first minute. The Gaels would lead 6-4 at the 18:56 mark, before SDSU came back to tie at the 17:36 mark. SDSU would take the lead at the 9:38 mark and not look back. The Aztecs led 12-7 at the break.

In the second half, the Aztecs took command by scoring three goals in the opening 10 minutes after the break. Biggers and Turpit scored SMC’s second-half goals.

Sydney Pinello made 12 saves in all 60 minutes for the Gaels.

SDSU outshot SMC 41-22, while the Gaels held an 18-9 edge in groundballs. SDSU led SMC 19-11 in draw controls.

Saint Mary’s is back in action on Friday, March 14 when it hosts Robert Morris at 3:00 p.m.
