MORAGA, Calif. — Saint Mary’s women’s track’s Haley Dorris was named Muscle Milk Student-Athlete of the Week for the week of March 27-April 1 after setting a new school record and personal best in the 5,000 meters at the San Francisco State Distance Carnival.
Dorris ran a program-best time of 17 minutes, 4.65 seconds on Friday. She won her heat and placed 27th overall in the deep, competitive field. The time was also a personal best for Dorris, who was racing in only her second collegiate 5,000 ever.
“Haley ran a perfectly executed race this past weekend,” said Saint Mary’s assistant coach Brett Zorich. “It has been amazing to watch her have such huge progress in the short time she has been here. It's not everyday that you get to coach an athlete with such fire and determination. We are excited to see what she can do in the 1,500 in two weeks.”
Dorris stayed with the lead pack throughout the race, but ran inconspicuously in the back of the pack. With less than 200 meters to go, she made a move and broke away from the group. She had one other runner to beat, and with just half a straightaway remaining, she distanced herself from her competitor for the heat victory and the school record.
Dorris and the Gaels next travel north to the Chico Distance Festival on Friday and Saturday.
