North Dakota 8, Saint Mary’s 0
Saint Mary’s was shutout for the second consecutive game to begin Saturday’s action as they dropped their opener to North Dakota, 8-0.
The Gaels were limited to three hits as Kaylin VanDomelen threw a complete game shutout for the Fighting Hawks (12-17). The junior held Saint Mary’s to three hits and and two walks on the mound and struck out seven.
The Gaels had a few opportunities to get on the scoreboard, including the fifth inning with runners on second and third and two outs, but couldn’t find a timely hit against VanDomelen.
Pitching struggled for Saint Mary’s as Katie Moss and Izzy Ortiz each surrendered four runs in the game. Moss (6-6) went six innings and struck out 7 UND batters before Ortiz relieved her to begin the seventh inning.
UC Davis 7, Saint Mary’s 5
Despite five extra base hits for the Gael offense, Saint Mary’s dropped the second matchup of the day to UC Davis (13-17), 7-5.
Hailey Sparacino got the Gaels on the board first as her double in the opening frame scored Alexander from second. The RBI was Sparacino’s team-leading 20th of the season. Saint Mary’s would notch three more runs in the third inning thanks to an RBI double by Dylan Linton followed up by a two run homer from Hannah Chew, her first long ball of 2017.
Alexander led the offense with a three hit game and increased her batting average to .378. Sparacino and Abbey Mariani also recorded two hit games in the loss.
The Gaels will finish up the Aggie Tournament tomorrow with an 11 a.m. contest against Princeton. Live stats for the game can be found on the Gaels’ schedule page.
