MORAGA, Calif. — In a top-flight pitching duel between Katie Moss and BYU's McKenna Bull, the Cougars (43-10, 13-0 WCC) emerged victorious with a 4-0 decision over the Gaels.
Moss and Bull entered the weekend series as two of the West Coast Conference's best pitchers. Both players are among the top-5 in ERA and Bull and Moss lead the WCC in strikeouts, respectively.
Moss was rolling early, allowing only two hits and striking out five in the first four innings. However, the Cougars managed a number of hits to give the Gaels trouble in the later stages of the game. All said and done, the senior finished with eight strikeouts, four walks, and four runs allowed over six and a third.
BYU's ace Bull proved why she's been among the conference's best over the last four seasons as she threw a complete game shutout while striking out 11 Gaels and allowing just four hits.
The Gaels (16-30, 2-11 WCC) had their best scoring opportunity in the fifth inning after back-to-back singles by Abbey Mariani and Bailey Lotz put two runners on with one out. SMC failed to produce a run however as Bull induced two consecutive strikeouts to end the threat.
BYU got on the board in the third inning thanks to a Brielle Breland solo shot to center field. They would also add lone runs in each of the final three innings, including a seventh inning sacrifice fly after three singles in a row.
The Gaels and Cougars will continue their series tomorrow in a doubleheader beginning at noon. In between games, seniors Katie Moss and Giana Bilotta will be recognized as part of Senior Day festivities. Live stats for both games can be found on the Gaels' softball schedule page.
