MORAGA, Calif. — On a sunny afternoon at Cottrell Field, the Saint Mary’s softball team (4-7) opened its home opener versus California, and ultimately fell to the Golden Bears (8-1), 11-0.

The Golden Bears got the afternoon started with a two run inning the second frame. After a 1-2-3 inning in the bottom of the second, visiting Cal scored two more in the top of the third inning aided by an error by the Gaels infield.

Saint Mary’s struggled defensively, totaling five errors on the day. The Gaels committed three errors in the top of the fourth inning, leading to seven Golden Bear runs in the frame.

Cara DiMercurio and Halle Sullivan recorded the two hits for SMC. Kaitlyn Whitt started in the circle for the Gaels and pitched three innings. Whitt faced 16 batters and gave up four earned runs before being relieved by senior Katie Moss.

Moss pitched two innings, giving up six runs (0 earned).

The Gaels travel to CSU Bakersfield for a trio of games during the upcoming weekend. SMC will face CSUB in a doubleheader on Saturday, Feb. 25, and finish the series with a single game at 12 p.m. on Sunday.
