BAKERSFIELD, Calif. — An extra-inning rally and a Katie Moss save helped Saint Mary’s (5-8) secure a win on Saturday over Bakersfield in doubleheader action.
Bakersfield 7, Saint Mary’s 3
In the first game of the day, Bakersfield (2-9) pulled together some late runs and downed the Gaels 7-3. All of the Roadrunners’ runs came in the fourth inning or later and a four-run fourth inning would be the difference maker in the ballgame.
On offense, Cara DiMercurio smacked the Gaels’ first home run of the season in the fourth inning and Nikki Alexander went 3-for-3 with three singles. Pitching struggled for Saint Mary’s as each of the three Gael pitchers allowed at least one earned run.
Summer Evans threw a complete game for Bakersfield, allowing only two earned runs while striking out three. Maddi Clark and Nadia Amezcua notched two hits each in the win.
Saint Mary’s 4, Bakersfield 3
Saint Mary’s pulled away a win in the second game of the doubleheader thanks to a three-run eighth inning and solid pitching performance from Katlyn Whitt.
Whitt allowed only one run for the first seven innings of the game as the freshman held her own against a potent Roadrunners lineup. After running into some trouble in the eighth inning, Moss entered the game with two outs and two runners on and induced a groundout back to the mound to end the game. Whitt’s final line included 7.2 innings pitched, six scattered hits, and two strikeouts.
Hailey Sparacino delivered a huge hit for the Gaels in their eighth inning rally as the junior’s double scored two runs and gave SMC a 3-1 lead. Bailey Lotz followed suit with a single and Sparacino came home to score the eventual game-winning run.
Saint Mary’s and Bakersfield will finish up their series tomorrow at noon in the third and final game. Live stats can be found on the Gaels’ softball schedule page. Results and recaps will be posted following the game.
