BAKERSFIELD, Calif. — In the rubber match game between Saint Mary’s (6-8) and Bakersfield, the Gaels put together a four-run seventh inning en route to a 5-2 win over the Roadrunners (2-10).
Abbey Mariani started the Gaels’ late rally with a leadoff walk to begin the seventh. Eryn McCoy pinch ran for Mariani and came around to score the game-tying run on a Bakersfield error. With two outs in the inning, Dylan Linton extended the rally to load the bases for Hailey Sparacino.
Just as she did in yesterday’s match, Sparacino delivered a huge hit for the Gaels, smacking a 3-2 pitch for a bases clearing triple. The triple gave Saint Mary’s a 5-2 lead and the score would hold as McCoy pitched a 1-2-3 seventh inning to seal the win for the Gaels.
As well as contributing on the basepaths, McCoy pitched a stellar game for the Gaels, going all seven innings while allowing just one earned run. McCoy improved to 1-2 with the win and has a 2.66 ERA in her five appearances.
For their next contest, Saint Mary’s will travel to San Luis Obispo to partake in the Cal Poly Tournament. The team will play five games in total with doubleheaders on Friday and Saturday and one final game on Sunday. Results and recaps can be found following each day’s action on SMCGaels.com.
