RENO, Nev. — Saint Mary’s (9-10) dropped their opening game in the Nevada Classic on Friday 5-1 to Utah Valley (2-8).
The Gaels scored their lone run in the third inning thanks to back-to-back extra base hits from a pair of freshmen. Catcher Hannah Chew led off the inning with a double and Halle Sullivan followed suit with a triple to left field to put the Gaels on the board. The duo finished a combined 3 for 5 on the day from the bottom of the lineup.
Cara DiMercurio also had a strong game at the dish with two singles in the cleanup spot. Saint Mary’s notched six hits total in the loss.
The decisive blow for the Gaels came in the third inning when Utah Valley’s Lyndsay Steverson smacked a three run homer for the Wolverines. UVU would cross runs across the plate in the sixth and seventh inning as well, but those would prove to be insurance runs as Saint Mary’s couldn’t conjure a late rally.
Katlyn Whitt started on the mound for SMC and picked up the loss as she went five innings while striking out three and allowing three runs. Katie Moss pitched two innings in relief and surrendered three hits and two runs.
Saint Mary’s will play a doubleheader tomorrow beginning at 9 a.m. The Gaels will face Utah Valley in their first contest followed by a match against Nevada at 11:30 a.m. Live stats can be found on the Gaels’ softball schedule page for each game and results and recaps will be posted later in the afternoon on SMCGaels.com.
