MORAGA, Calif. — Saint Mary’s late rally scored three runs in the bottom of the seventh but the Gaels couldn’t walk-off against the Wildcats as Northwestern (11-14) took Tuesday’s contest, 6-4.
With runners on the corners, the Gaels (11-17) struck first in the bottom of the first off an Abbey Mariani sacrifice-fly to left field. Northwestern would claim the momentum in the top of the third frame, scoring four runs. The Gaels would commit an in-field error to spark the offensive burst in the frame.
Saint Mary’s defense struggled to make plays as the team committed four errors during the game. All six runs charged to Gaels’ pitchers were unearned as a result.
Down 6-1, Saint Mary’s would make a strong push in the final inning. With the bases loaded and two outs, Hailey Sparacino wore a pitch to drive in an RBI. Hannah Chew followed up with a line drive single up the middle to drive in another run and keep the bases full. Northwestern brought in reliever Morgan Newport to record the final out, but she balked just two pitches into her appearance to make it a 6-4 game. Newport would get the last laugh however as she struck out Mariani to seal the win for the Wildcats.
Saint Mary’s continues their homestand tomorrow as they face off against Princeton in doubleheader action. Weather permitting, the Gaels and Tigers will take the field at 2 p.m. followed by a 4 p.m. contest. Live stats for each game can be found on the Gaels’ softball schedule page.
