MORAGA, Calif. — Senior Katie Moss delivered a gem Wednesday, recording 13 strikeouts to help the Gaels split the day’s action versus the Princeton Tigers.

Saint Mary’s 3, Princeton 2

Senior Katie Moss (7-6) got the nod in the mound for SMC and went the distance. She pitched all 10 innings, striking out a season-high, 13 batters. Moss got off to a solid start, retiring the first nine Tigers.

The Gaels drew the first run of the game in the bottom of the third inning. With runners on second and third, Hannah Chew reached on a fielders-choice, scoring in Nikki Alexander for the single run of the inning.

After giving up the first hit of the game in the top of the fourth, Moss quickly recovered with three straight strikeouts to end the frame.

The Tigers tied the game, 1-1, in the top of the fifth frame after a sacrifice fly with a single out.

Giving up a leadoff double, Moss showed her poise and experience in the top of the sixth. The senior retired the next three by groundout, strikeout and a pop fly to escape the inning without a blemish.

The game would extend to extra innings, with the Tigers scoring in the top of the ninth frame. With two outs and runner on third, pinch-hitter Eryn McCoy delivered a clutch single up the middle to tie the game, 2-2.

The Gaels clinched the game in the bottom of the 10th, as Abbey Mariani striped one down the middle of the Tigers defense to bat in the winning run.

Saint Mary’s 0, Princeton 3

Junior Kaitlyn Whitt started in the circle and pitched 7.0 innings for the Gaels.

The offense was able to secure six hits in the game, but couldn’t capitalize with runners in scoring position. SMC left a total of seven runners on base.

Bailey Lotz led the Gaels in the game, going 2-for-3.

The Tigers got on the board in the first inning. Playing small-ball, Princeton used a single and a sacrifice bunt to advance the runner. With one out, the Tigers secured a base hit and an early 1-0 lead.

Princeton would lead wire-to-wire to secure the 3-0 win and avoid the sweep.

Saint Mary’s will be back on the mound next Tuesday, March 28 versus University of Missouri-Kansas City. The Gaels will take on UMKC at Cottrell Field for a doubleheader with games at 2 and 4 p.m. PT.
