MORAGA, Calif. — In the day’s doubleheader, Saint Mary’s (14-18) swept UMKC (7-25) at Cottrell Field behind more stellar pitching and solid hitting.

Dylan Linton went 4 for 8 in today’s action, driving in two RBIs. Hannah Chew also collected four hits in seven at-bats, collecting a team-high three RBIs.

Up next for the Gaels is the final non-conference match at Cal. SMC faces the Golden Bears on Wednesday, April 5, with first pitch scheduled for 4 p.m.

Saint Mary’s 4, UMKC 0

Senior Katie Moss (8-6) got the nod in the circle, and delivered another gem for the Gaels. Moss pitched a no-no through five innings to go along with nine strikeouts. The senior pitched her eighth complete game of the season, allowing just one hit and striking out 10.

The Kangaroos didn’t get their first hit till the top of the sixth inning.

The Gaels struck first in the bottom of the third inning, with a leadoff hit by third baseman Jaymee Campbell. The Gaels leader in batting average, Nikki Alexander delivered the first run with a double down the left field line.

With runners on the corners, Hailey Sparacino rocked a line drive down the center field gap to bring in the Gaels second run.

SMC extended its lead in the fifth inning, as Chew pulled a double to the warning tracks of right field to bring home two more runs and give the Gaels the 4-0 win.

Saint Mary’s 3, UMKC 1

The Roos got the first run of the game in top of the first. The Gaels answered right back off a single from Chew. The catcher brought in Alexander for the game-tying run.

The game would remain 1-1 until the Gaels capitalized in the bottom of the fourth inning. With two outs and bases loaded, Linton drilled a single to first base to give SMC the 3-1 lead over UMKC.

Katlyn Whitt pitched an outstanding game, going 5.1 innings and allowing just three hits. Moss entered the game in the top of the sixth to relieve Whitt, and pitched back-to-back strikeouts to get out of the inning.

Up 3-1 and in the top of the seventh, Moss continued her dominance in the circle to collect her second save of the season.
