BERKELEY, Calif. — In the season’s second meeting between the Bay Area rivals, Saint Mary’s (14-19) could not avenge an early season loss to Cal (22-11) Wednesday afternoon, after dropping a close road game at Levine-Fricke Field, 3-2.

Senior Katie Moss (8-7) pitched 107 throws, striking out three and allowing just three earned runs.

The Gaels were just 2-for-7 with runners in scoring position. The Golden Bears bats also struggled, going just 1-for-9 with runners in scoring position.

The Gaels quickly got on the board, with a run in the top of the first inning. With runners on second and third and two outs, Abbey Mariani delivered a single down to left field to bring in Nikki Alexander for the quick 1-0 lead.

The Golden Bears countered in a hurry and delivered a single run themselves in the bottom of the first.

Moving to the third frame, Alexander reached first base off a walk, and the Gaels moved delivered a sacrifice bunt to move the runner into scoring position. With one out, Hannah Chew struck a single up the middle to bring Alexander to home plate for the 2-1 advantage.

With a leadoff triple in the bottom of the fourth, Cal brought home two runs to gain the one run lead.

Trailing by just one, SMC could not record a hit in the remaining three innings, eventually falling to the Golden Bears, 3-2.
