MORAGA, Calif. — In the series finale, Saint Mary’s got up early on Santa Clara (10-24, 2-1 WCC), but could not maintain the two run lead, as the Broncos stormed back in the fifth inning to claim the 4-2 win Saturday afternoon at Cottrell Field.

Eryn McCoy started in the circle for the Gaels (15-21, 1-2 WCC) and pitched 5.0 innings. McCoy struck out three batters, and gave up just two earned runs. The first year player also batted in the Gaels lineup and scored a run for SMC.

Senior Katie Moss came in for relief purposes and pitched the last two innings giving up an unearned run.

Nikki Alexander continued to impress as the leadoff hitter for SMC, going 2-for-2 with one of the two RBIs. Bailey Lotz also collected two hits, hitting 2-for-3 on the day.

Playing right field, Abbey Mariani went 1-for-3 with a RBI off an absolute crushing homer over the left field wall.

With two outs and runners on first and second, Alexander delivered a well placed single in the center field gap to bring home McCoy.

Leading 1-0, the Gaels would jump out to a two run lead off Mariani’s home run. The homer was the sophomore’s first of the season.

The Broncos would do their damage in the fifth running. After a leadoff single and stolen base, SCU scored its first run off a double by Spirakis. Accompanied by a Gaels error, SCU recorded five hits and three runs to take the one run advantage.

SCU would add its fourth run in the top of the sixth. The Gaels would commit an infield error to begin the inning and the Broncos capitalized with strong base running.

The Gaels will remain home to host San Diego for a three-game series next Friday and Saturday. SMC will host USD to a single game Friday at 3 p.m. A doubleheader will be played on Saturday, April 15, with game times at 12 and 2 p.m. at Cottrell Field.
