MORAGA, Calif. — In the first of three games against San Diego (17-16, 3-1 WCC) this weekend, the Gaels were shutout by the Torero’s Megan Sabbatini in a 4-0 loss.

Saint Mary’s (15-22, 1-3 WCC) recorded just four hits in the defeat with three hits coming from the Gaels’ one through four hitters. Sabbatini struck out six Gaels and walked only one as she went the distance for her eighth win of the season.

The Gaels had their best scoring opportunity in the fourth inning when two singles and a walk loaded the bases for Eryn McCoy, but Sabbatini induced an infield popout to neutralize the threat. McCoy later doubled with two outs in the seventh inning but to no avail as the Gael offense couldn’t scratch a run across.

Katie Moss (8-9) got the nod for the Gaels and threw a complete game, allowing five hits and one earned run. Moss struck out 10 Toreros and danced around five free passes to limit the damage. San Diego would score all four of their runs in the third, partially prolonged by a Saint Mary’s error on defense.

The Gaels and Toreros face off again tomorrow for a doubleheader beginning at 12 p.m. Live stats for both games can be found on the Gaels’ softball schedule page.
