SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. — Perry Cohen and Pavan Sagoo are both within the top-5 of the leaderboard, as the Saint Mary’s men’s golf team are in a tie for fourth after the 36-hole day at the Desert Mountain Intercollegiate.
Saint Mary’s shot rounds of 281-291 (-4/ 572) for the fourth place finish on the first day. The Gaels are 10 shots behind leaders and host Michigan. The Wolverines are currently ranked 44 in the latest GolfStat rankings. No. 43 Northwestern (-8/ 568) sit six shots back in second place while No. 34 Kansas rounds out the top-three with an 8-under par finish.
SMC will tee-off at 8:30 a.m. PT off the first tee. The Gaels will be paired with Purdue and Alabama in the final round.
The long, arduous day of 36 holes proved to be an easy feat for a pair of Gaels. Cohen, who already has a medalist finish earlier this season, is tied for fourth after rounds of 65-73 for a 6-under 138.
In the first round, Cohen carded an impressive nine birdies, with four straight coming on holes 14 to 17. The junior finished the opening round with six birdies on his last eight holes.
After an opening round of 71, Sagoo took aim in the latter 18 holes, scoring a 5-under 67. The junior got the scoring going on the par 5 16th hole, as he carded an outstanding eagle. Finishing the round on the front nine, Sagoo shot three straight birdies on holes 2, 3 and 4 to finish the day one in a tie for fourth.
Connor Blick shot 4-over and is currently in a tie for 35th place. The junior out of Danville, Calif. carded rounds of 74-74 to finish the 36-hole day.
First year player Blake Hathcoat saw his first action for SMC since competing in the Saint Mary’s Invitational. Hathcoat struggled in the first two rounds and ranks tied-53rd in the field.
