CHULA VISTA, Calif. — Freshman Eduardo Carrete collected his third top-5 finish of the season with a 2-under 70 round on the final day of the Lamkin Grips San Diego Classic. The Gaels finished eighth out of 15 as a team with a 3-over combined score and had the highest finish of unranked teams.
Carrete rode four birdies, including back-to-back birdies on the 15th and 16th holes, to guide him to his tied-5th finish in the field of 92 competitors. The first-year Gael showed consistency throughout the tournament, posting round scores of 70-71-70 to finish at 5-under.
Ben Wolcott of No. 29 Mississippi finished in first place with a combined score of 9-under after an impressive 5-under final round. Wolcott was part of an incredible 15-under effort by Mississippi to run away from the field to win the Lamkin Grips at 16-under. No. 28 North Carolina, No. 49 Middle Tennessee State, and No. 18 Texas all tied for second at 2-under.
Gaels Pavan Sagoo and Perry Cohen finished in the top half of the field at t-28th and t-39th, respectively. Connor Blick also fell into that category at t-43rd. Sagoo and Cohen each shot a 2-over for the final round while Blick played a 1-over round.
Saint Mary’s will take a few weeks off before beginning their next tournament at The Goodwin on Mar. 30. The tournament will take place at the Stanford Golf Course and is the second to last tournament of the season before the West Coast Conference Championships.
